The Unplugged Wedding

I love the idea of unplugged weddings and I'm going to tell you why you should too! An unplugged wedding is a wedding where guests are strongly encouraged not to use cell phones, iPads, or cameras during the ceremony.

Don't get me wrong.. I love my iPhone. And I actually love getting pictures of guests getting pictures. It's always amusing to sneak up behind someone and get a shot of their phone while they're getting a shot of something else.

But sometimes it can interfere with certain parts of the wedding. From a photographer's point of view, one of the most important (and most stressful) portions of the day is the ceremony. There are parts of the ceremony that absolutely can't be missed. These parts include: the bride walking down the aisle, the groom's reaction to the bride, exchanging rings, the kiss. People love taking pictures. Even if they don't have a "fancy camera" they still want to get an awesome shot with their phone. So they'll extend their arms into the aisle to get the shot, or some people have even gotten into the aisle to get "the perfect picture". The problem with this is... They're ruining the photographer's shot. And the photographer is the one that is taking pictures for the couple. Aunt So and So might get a pretty decent picture on her phone, but it can also mean that the couple will miss out on getting that shot from their photographer.

The picture above is an example of a shot that could have been ruined. Fortunately the guest was super polite and didn't extend their phone into the aisle. I'm not going to include any pictures of people doing the wrong thing because that would be super mean. Most of the time people have no idea that they're interfering! They just want some awesome pics to post on Facebook from the awesome wedding they're attending.

An added bonus of having an unplugged wedding is you get more moments like this! Your guests get to be completely present. You won't look around and see faces partially hidden by iPhones and iPads. You'll get to see the people closest to you watching you... and not posting to their walls and Instagram.

Don't get me wrong... I love cell phones at receptions! And selfie sticks are always hilarious.

I'm kind of obsessed with this picture. The bride's sister took a call while her phone was on a selfie stick. It looks like she has an antenna attached to her phone. Imagine the kind of reception you'd get with that...

This little girl is SO cute! She was so excited about getting a picture of the bride and the phone was hilariously big in her little hands! After getting the shot she got really excited and ran back to her parents.

Phones are such a huge part of our lives so I love capturing moments like this. That way in 10 years when we don't have phones anymore (because we're all made up of robot parts and they're implanted in our brains) we'll look back and think "awwww".
